Want to enjoy a true experience? Explore the slate mine on the Morépire estate in Bertrix which takes you into the bowels of the earth and discover the impressive result of ninety years’ work by the ‘scailtons’, the slate miners!
Slate is a typical stone from our regions that is easily recognised by its dark grey hue and unique structure. You see it in many constructions, but are you familiar with its history? It’s time to set off on an extraordinary, timeless journey: you’ve begun a tour lasting one hour into the depths of the earth, 25 metres underground. Rest assured, you go down a comfortable staircase, in total safety. When you arrive, you’re immersed in a whole other world: underground galleries, gigantic chambers opened by explosives, beams, wagons... So many vestiges of a glorious industrial past that has been totally forgotten.
Exploring exceptional heritage
With a user-friendly audioguide (no individual headsets but consoles with loudspeakers that allow you to talk to your children while listening), you visit the mine, which has now been converted into a museum, at your own pace. Following a 1 km trail, it's an opportunity to learn more about the geology of schist stone, the characteristics of slate, extraction techniques... not to mention the everyday life and difficult working conditions of the miners. You have to come down here to understand what they went through... Also, if you want to hear a former miner’s testimony, you can book a guide for a tour peppered with anecdotes and memories.
