In Montleban, in the province of Luxemburg, an authentic mill dating back to 1545 has recently started grinding grain again, powered by the hydraulic force of the River Ourthe. The grain is milled here to make different kinds of flour and a special beer. Delicious, according to the connoisseurs!
The mill’s age is undisputed. All that we know is that it first crops up in documents dating from 1545. Grain was milled here continuously until 1956. The Massard family has owned the mill since 1892, and Jean-Marie Massard (fourth generation) has recently restored it to its former glory.
You can buy different kinds of flour ground at the mill. The same goes for the delicious local beer that is produced from the grain, which can also be tasted on the spot: Bigaut, which also happens to be the nickname of Jean-Marie’s illustrious brother.
Behind the scenes, the fifth and sixth Massard generations are ready to continue this wonderful family project. The ambition is to carry on supplying the region with 100% organically produced flour for centuries to come.
