On the hunt for menhirs and dolmens in Wéris

There’s no doubt our two favourite Gauls would’ve loved Wéris, one of the most beautiful villages in Wallonia. Just a few kilometres from Durbuy, hunting down dolmens and menhirs will take you on a journey back in time...

I'm sure this is something you can still recall: Obelix carrying a menhir on his back (or throwing it at a Roman!) as though it were a mere pebble. Have you ever dreamt of seeing one in real life? Well good news! There’s no need to go to France or Great Britain because we have some on our own turf, in the delightful village of Wéris. But before we make our way around, let’s start with a little history: menhirs (blocks of stone) and dolmens (large stone tables) were erected at different points in prehistory and history, mainly during the Neolithic period. It was Neolithic farmer-breeders who constructed these megaliths (the dolmens and menhirs).Your experience will start with a free visit to the megalith museum, which is dedicated to megalithic art and the fascinating Neolithic period!

This place is a fascinating deep dive into the past. Did you know? This was the period when humans, by discovering farming and breeding, would leave their nomadic past behind and began transforming the land around them, thus taking control of it. This ”Neolithic revolution” gave rise to a new way of life... The very way of life we live today! It’s all explained in this museum, alongside what people wore at that time, the way these megaliths were constructed, and their related funeral garments. You’ll learn all about this time period through educational panels, multimedia clips, models, castings, recreations, and archaeological material.

After your trip to the museum (which should take around half an hour), you’ll finally head off with your guide to hunt down these mysterious dolmens and menhirs ‘for real’, on a five-kilometre countryside walk (around two hours). And on the way back, you’ll be able to enjoy your Ardennes-étape advantage: a Dolménius, a craft amber beer you won’t find anywhere else...
